BCSD Wellness Policy

  

In accordance with the Federal and State Wellness Laws,HortElementary School is adhering to the following BCSD Wellness PolicyThe teachers shall limit celebrations or parties that involve food during the school day to two per year (before winter break and Valentine’s Day).   Food items brought to school for celebrations are to be commercially prepared and packaged.  Foods prepared in a home may not be offered

Individual birthday celebrations involving food and beverages are not allowed.  Teachers will return food items brought for birthdays.

 

The following are some guidelines for snacks or treats in the classroom:

Reduce and eventually completely eliminate giving non-nutritious foods.  Non-nutritious foods are foods that contain:

Ø     35% or more of its total calories from fat

Ø     10% or more of its total calories from saturated fat

Ø     35% or more of its total weight is sugar (not including fruits and vegetables)

Ø     first ingredient is sugar

 

Healthier Food  Alternatives for celebrations are:

Gatorade                               Milk                                       Fruit

Sports Drinks                        100% fruit juice                      Vegetables

Water                                   Breakfast Bars                         Jerky

Granola Bars                         Cereal 

Popcorn                                Trail Mix   

 

Non-food Alternatives

pencils                                   stickers                                  small toys

crafts                                     erasers                                   pencil sharpeners

bookmarks                            pens                                       special privileges
