BCSD Education Foundation Seeks New Board Members

October 9, 2017 – The Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) Education Foundation is currently looking to fill vacancies on its Board of Directors. The BCSD Education Foundation is a charitable, non-profit organization whose mission is to partner with the community to provide resources that directly impact the lives of children through innovative educational programs. Several grant opportunities are available to BCSD teachers through the Education Foundation which are approved at the monthly meetings held at the BCSD Education Center.

“Our children are the future of our community,” said Alphonso Rivera, President of the BCSD Education Foundation Board of Directors, who has served since 2012. “Having more resources available to teachers in the classroom can directly impact a student’s success.”

The BCSD Education Foundation raises funds via events such as the spring Bakersfield Luau and their signature holiday event “Teddy Bear Picnic.” In the fall, the organization hosts their annual golf tournament, which is coming up on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Kern River Golf Course. During the 2016-2017 school year, the foundation introduced a new giving campaign, the Tree of Knowledge, which is on permanent display in the front lobby of the BCSD Education Center, and features multicolored leaves and a limited number of foundational rocks with donor name inscriptions. Every dollar raised via these campaigns goes directly back to benefit students in the classroom.

“I have been able to introduce some of the great artists of our time to my students because of the Ed Foundation,” said Karas Loo, Transitional Kindergarten teacher at Nichols Elementary School. “My TK students are painting like Jackson Pollack, creating like Monet, and discussing the techniques of Vincent Van Gogh. Thanks to the efforts of the Ed Foundation, I have a grant that provides picture books and materials to bring this year-long art study to life.”
