August 9, 2017 – Five Owens Intermediate School students had the opportunity to travel to Northern California to take part in a 7-day leadership development program. The Outdoor Advanced Leadership Academy (OALA) is a unique program offered by the YMCA of San Francisco, in conjunction with the California Waterfowl Association.
Kathryn Harper, teacher at Owens Intermediate, said, “I began a relationship with the California Waterfowl Association through their classroom visits. They help educate youth about waterfowl, wetlands and conservation. Through this partnership, we were informed of the leadership camp, and five of our students were chosen to participate.”
The students were selected based on short essays they wrote and submitted for consideration. During the week, they participated in leadership skills development, hiking, kayaking, rope bridges, environmental lessons, and much more.
