CBET Program Celebrates Graduations
June 9, 2017 – For several years, the English Language Learners (ELL) Department of the Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) has offered specialized English training for parents during the school year known as the Community Based English Tutoring (CBET). Every Tuesday and Thursday night during the school year, parents attended sessions to help them to improve their English skills. The goal is to empower parents to communicate with their children more effectively and support them academically.
CBET was held at three different BCSD school sites this year: Evergreen, Longfellow and Mount Vernon Elementary Schools. To celebrate the completion of the program, CBET recently hosted graduation ceremonies at each of the school sites where participants were honored and presented with certificates of achievement. Nearly 100 parents participated in this year’s program and graduation ceremonies.
Erick Casallas, Supervisor of English Language Learners Services at BCSD, said, “Our staff is so proud of the parents for making the effort to attend class all year in order to improve their English skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.”
