Exemplary Young Women Honored at Annual Juliet Thorner Awards
May 16, 2017 – A total of 74 girls from schools across the Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) were honored with the Juliet Thorner Award at the 47th annual event held at Sierra Middle School. The award recognizes outstanding young women nominated by their school based on several criteria, including citizenship, academic achievements, leadership and extracurricular activities.
In addition to the awards, two high school students received educational scholarships designated for girls who graduated from BCSD schools. The ceremony included a performance by a Folkloric dance group from Mt. Vernon Elementary.
The awards ceremony is named after Juliet Thorner, who was a pediatrician in Bakersfield for more than 30 years and contributed many hours of health and wellness education to students and parents in BCSD schools. In 1990, BCSD named a new elementary school in her honor.
