Emerson Middle School Hosts Community Outreach Event

December 13, 2016 – Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) partnered with the Local Chapter of The Links, Inc. for an event promoting positive community relations with law enforcement at Emerson Middle School.  The schedule of events included special guest speakers, student presentations, law enforcement exhibit fair and several educational workshops.

Students from Emerson and other schools across the district were in attendance, as were parents and families from the surrounding community.  There were many topics discussed during the educational workshops, including safeguards with social media and positive interaction with law enforcement.  Guest speakers included “Journey Out” author Dr. Stephany Powell, Detective Vidal Dustin of the Kern County Sheriff’s Department, and Lewis Neal, BCSD’s Youth Services Supervisor.

During the exhibit fair, students were allowed to view the inside of an armored vehicle, hold various items of police equipment and had the opportunity to meet a four-legged member of a K-9 unit.

The special event was a collaborative effort of BCSD, the Bakersfield Police Department (BPD) and The Links, Inc. Bakersfield Chapter.
