BCSD Expands Mariachi Program

August 18, 2016 – The Bakersfield City School District is expanding its Mariachi Program from one school (College Heights Elementary) to five additional schools. This is thanks to a partnership with the District’s After School Education and Safety (ASES) Program.

The five new sites are:

– Compton Junior High School
– Stiern Middle School
– Casa Loma Elementary School
– Garza Elementary School
– Mt. Vernon Elementary School

The BCSD Mariachi Program was started in 1994 by the Board of Education. Since then, the program has been offered at multiple sites.

This recent expansion was made possible thanks to the dedication of several music faculty members who volunteered to work in collaboration with the ASES Program to implement the program. All students in the Mariachi Program must meet the prerequisite of participating in the District’s Instrumental Music Program for at least one year. This is an enrichment opportunity for the students.
