Board of Education Member Represents BCSD in Washington
July 11, 2016 – The 33rd annual conference of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO) took place in Washington DC in June. The event is an opportunity for Latino policymakers to meet with their colleagues from all levels of government to address the challenges and opportunities facing our communities and our nation. The NALEO Annual Conference provides a venue for the meaningful exchange of ideas and solutions to today’s most pressing policy issues.
Bakersfield City School District President Pro-Tem, Lillian Tafoya, represented the District at the conference. One of the conference speakers was Dr. John B. King, United States Secretary of Education. He offered three challenges to school board members:
• Work toward increasing greater diversity in the teacher workforce
• Ensure meaningful stakeholder input
• Continue to be advocates for students, justice, and equity, and to use our voice for demanding
Mrs. Tafoya shared these challenges with BCSD board members during the June board meeting.
