BCSD hosts 18th Annual Academic Pentathlon

May 27, 2016 – The Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) presented the 18th annual Academic Pentathlon for grades 4th-6th on May 21st at Stiern Middle School’s gymnasium. The Academic Pentathlon is a student competition where a team of up to nine students per school compete in various academic proficiency levels. Families and community members attended the event to cheer for their favorite school teams.

Students completed objective tests in Literature, Mathematics, Essay, and Science to prepare for the event. This year’s Academic Pentathlon Super Quiz will focused on History-Social Science. District Coordinator Michael Stone noted, “The Academic Pentathlon brings a competitive aspect to learning that makes it very exciting for the participants.”

The goals of the Academic Pentathlon include: maximizing the individual learning potential of adolescent students through the motivation of competitive challenge, providing schools with a vehicle to focus on and reward the academic efforts and achievements of their students, and stimulating interaction of schools, communities, and industry in support of academic endeavor.

The event was started in 1984 by Dr. Robert Peterson, then County Superintendent of Schools, with the Orange County Department of Education. The BCSD event is the only event in the state to have a 4th and 5th Grade competition.
