State History Day Winners

Bakersfield City School District is proud to announce that five Thorner  Elementary  6th grade students won the California State History Day Championship held  April 25-27, 2014, in Riverside, CA and will now represent the state at the national competition.

Alexis Hill, Max Barrera, Candace Maurer, Kailyn Hills and Logan Eldridge will be advancing to the National History Day Competition at the University of Maryland, in Washington, D.C., June 15-19, 2014.

The students conducted an extensive research project on the subject of Japanese Internment which required eight months to complete, then presented their ten minute winning group performance.  The coaches, Gigi Maurer and Lisa Barrera, are impressed with the students’ determination.  “The fact that these sixth graders won state champions is impressive. It is even more outstanding that they beat seventh and eighth graders in the process,” said Maurer.

We applaud the students and their coaches on their hard work, dedication and perseverance.  The History Day group is seeking corporate and personal donations to attend the National Competition in Washington, DC.
