Severely Handicapped

Severely Handicapped Program

The Bakersfield City School District operates self-contained classrooms from Pre-K through 8th grade for students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities.  In each of our classrooms we strive to meet the unique needs of all of our students with a variety of teaching methodologies and strategies.  The Severely Handicapped classrooms focus on pre-academic and/or functional life skills and utilize the California Common Core Connectors, to meet the unique academic needs of our students.

Every classroom in the SH program has a classroom teacher and two instructional aides who work collaboratively to engage their students in the learning process. Daily schedules and routines are followed to build a structured learning environment. Students in this program also receive additional services based on need. It is the goal of the SH program to ensure that every student can thrive academically, behaviorally and socially.
